A doctor who specializes in health issues specific to women is a gynecologist (GYN). Female reproductive health is typically the focus of gynecology. When the medical focus is on pregancy and childbirth, an obstetrician (OB) is consulted. Naturally, many gynecologists are also obstetricians (OB/GYN). Southwest Health System in Cortez, Colorado has a competent team ready to address women’s health in the Four Corners area.
Who should visit a gynecologist?
Women of all ages may visit with a gynecologist or OB/GYN. Young women in their early teens are becoming sexually mature. A gynecologist can help them understand changes to their body. Even if a woman hasn’t been pregnant, as she ages she may have female health concerns. A gynecologist can help women through pregnancy, menstruation, fertility and menopause.
Women may visit with their gynecologist for other conditions relevant to the female health, such as:
- family planning
- inflammation and abscesses of the pelvis
- sexual disfunction
What a female patient can expect from her OB/GYN appointment
New patients, particularly those who are young teen-age women, may simply get to know her gynecologist. The GYN will get some general health information. Furthermore, the provider may advise the young woman about what to expect from gynecological visits in the future. All female patients, regardless of their age or health condition, should be willing to provide an honest description of their concerns and lifestyle so the OB/GYN can best help them.
Paperwork for your visit to your OB/GYN
Your visit to an OB/GYN may be more effective if you prepare the paperwork in advance. Print, fill out the forms and deliver them to our New Patient Coordinator (at 20 South Market Street in Cortez). They can also be delivered to the clinic where your appointment is scheduled. Please note that all paperwork is due one week prior to your scheduled appointment. This helps us to become familiar with your healthcare needs by the time you arrive for your OB/GYN appointment.
Thank you, and we welcome the opportunity to meet your female healthcare needs. In the meantime, feel free to reach out to our New Patient Coordinator (970-516-1616)!
