Cardiac Services diagram-02In an emergency, always call 9-1-1. If you have an accident or illness requiring urgent attention you can take comfort in knowing that your local hospital provides emergency care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Specialty trained and skilled physicians, nurses, and other staff take care of approximately 13,000 patients each year at Southwest Memorial Hospital. Care levels range from minor to highly complex illnesses and injuries. If a patient’s care is too complex to be admitted to SHS, the patient is stabilized and transferred to a higher level of care facility. SHS is a designated Level IV trauma center and meets all the requirements for the State of Colorado and the American College of Surgeons.

Our Team

The Emergency Department is staffed by licensed emergency medicine trained physicians 24 hours per day – 7 days a week. All of medical and nursing staff have advanced training in cardiac, trauma and pediatric care. Our team utilizes evidence based practice and best care practices to provide you with the high quality care that you deserve.

What to expect when you come to the emergency department

Triage: Every patient seen in the Emergency Department is first evaluated by a nurse, a process we call “triage.” This process ensures that a patient who requires the most urgent medical care is seen and treated quickly. Every effort is made to get patients into treatment rooms as quickly as possible. Physician Examination: You will be examined by a qualified medical provider. As well as emergency trained physicians, SHS has licensed Physician Assistants who also provide care in the ED. If you require lab work or x-rays, that testing will be done. Tests may take 20-60 minutes to get the results. The Registration Process: After receiving a medical evaluation, your registration process will be completed. You will be asked the usual questions – address, employer, insurance plan, friend or relative to notify in the event of further emergency, and so forth. It is important to provide a valid telephone number in the event that we need to contact you with further test results or directions.  Discharge Process: Upon discharge, you will be provided instructions and if necessary, prescriptions by the nurse and/or physician.  Admission To The Hospital: If you need to be admitted, we will contact your primary care physician or a specialist who will take over your care while you are hospitalized.

A Note About Waiting Times

We make every possible effort to care for patients quickly. Unfortunately, there are times when the Emergency Department is very busy, either with a high volume of patients or individuals who are critically ill or injured. Severely ill or injured patients are cared for before those who have less severe illnesses or injuries.  In the event that you have to wait in the emergency room or waiting area, please know we will get you cared for as quickly as we can. We want to assure you that our staff and physicians will take all the time necessary to ensure that you receive compassionate and high quality care.

Our Ambulance Team

The ambulances at Southwest Memorial Hospital are fully equipped with the most advanced technology and staffed with state and/or nationally licensed emergency medical technicians (EMTs). They have advanced training in cardiac and pediatric care. Upon being dispatched, they respond rapidly to accident scenes, businesses, and residences to stabilize and transport injured or ill individuals back to the hospital. Once in the emergency department, EMTs frequently continue to assist with patient care. This helps to provide for the best possible communication and continuity of care throughout the patient’s ED visit. Our EMT’s have also received advance training in emergency management and disaster planning. This ensures that in the event of a mass casualty event, our community will have excellent responses and care.
